Description

Tahu Balado is a popular Indonesian dish featuring crispy fried tofu tossed in a spicy, flavorful chili sauce known as balado. This vibrant red sambal is made from a blend of red chilies, shallots, garlic, and tomatoes, sautéed to perfection. The result is a bold, savory, and spicy dish that’s perfect as a side for steamed rice or as a stand-alone snack for chili lovers. Quick to make and packed with flavor, Tahu Balado is a delicious way to elevate humble tofu into something unforgettable.

Main Ingredients for Tahu Balado

Instructions

  1. Fry the Tofu

Heat oil in a pan and fry the tofu blocks until they are golden brown and cooked through. Remove and set aside.

  1. Sauté the Spice Paste

Finely grind or blend the shallots, garlic, curly chili peppers, large red chili, and kaffir lime leaves to make a smooth spice paste.

Heat a little oil in a pan and sauté this spice paste until fragrant and aromatic.

  1. Cook the Sauce

Add the granulated sugar, salt, and chopped tomato to the sautéed spice paste. Stir and cook until the tomato softens and the sauce thickens.

  1. Combine Tofu and Sauce

Add the fried tofu into the pan with the sauce.

Stir gently and cook until the tofu absorbs the flavors evenly and the sauce coats the tofu well.

  1. Serve

Remove from heat and serve your delicious Tahu Balado hot with steamed rice.
